Detail of user experience Cheapest van hire I could find around London, best price to be got if you book more than one day in advance. A short walk from Caledonian Road tube station, and easy to find. Efficient staff in reception, fast to process you, and send you downstairs to collect your vehicle. This is where the problems start. It's up to you to check your vehicle for damage before you leave, and make sure that the sixt rep notes this in their system. If you miss something, you will be blamed for it upon returning the vehicle, and then will be asked to pay for the repair. The standard loss/damage waiver insurance limits this amount to £500, or if you pay a daily charge of nearly £10, it comes down to a max of £75. (Prices & excess as quoted for van, cars may be different). If sixt got their vehicles repaired after even a few accidents, it wouldn't be so bad, as there wouldn't be too much damage to look at, but they seem to not bother at all with some of the vans. Maybe they make more money from charging people for repairs and not having them done, than they do from the actual rental! Apparently, one reason for this is that when the British army run low on vehicles in war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan, they use sixt vehicles as back up. This is obviously much cheaper for the government than purchasing new vehicles which are only likely to be ruined anyway, and they always pay the extra daily insurance charge to bring the damage excess down to £75. Unfortunately this makes life difficult for the ordinary punter, as checking each bullet hole and petrol bomb burn mark is a very tedious process. On the plus side, the engines seem pretty good, as the soldiers need reliability to get them out of the danger areas quickly. All in all, even with the hassle, they're still one of the cheapest and easy to get to, so I keep using them.
